Tensions Rise as UAE Responds to Sudan’s Decision to Cut Ties

In a new escalation of diplomatic tensions, Dr. Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the United Arab Emirates, expressed regret over the decision by Sudan’s government in Port Sudan to sever relations with Abu Dhabi.

Taking to the platform X (formerly Twitter), Gargash criticized the move, stating: “Throwing baseless accusations at the UAE by some individuals linked to official Sudanese entities is a tired tactic, aimed at reproducing crises and avoiding accountability.” He emphasized that such rhetoric does not reflect the deep, historical ties between the Sudanese and Emirati peoples.

Despite the fallout, Gargash reiterated the UAE’s commitment to supporting efforts for a political solution in Sudan. “The UAE’s relationship with the Sudanese people is longstanding and will not be swayed by provocations. We remain committed to working with partners to achieve a swift political resolution that preserves Sudan’s unity and stability,” he said.

The diplomatic strain follows Sudan’s expulsion of 15 Emirati diplomats in December 2023, amid accusations that the UAE supported the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s ongoing conflict. The UAE has categorically denied these claims, affirming its neutrality and ongoing humanitarian efforts.

Gargash reaffirmed that the UAE’s stance is clear and rooted in political solutions. “There is no alternative to an immediate ceasefire and a path back to constitutional civilian governance,” he said.

Sudan has been embroiled in a brutal conflict since April 2023, as clashes between the army and RSF have killed thousands and displaced millions. Both sides have traded accusations of receiving foreign support.

As tensions deepen, the future of Sudan-UAE relations will likely hinge on the willingness of both nations to rise above discord and prioritize peace and stability in the region.
