The 34th Arab League Summit convened in Baghdad with Sudan’s escalating conflict high on the agenda. As fighting intensifies between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Arab leaders are emphasizing the urgent need for a political solution to halt the country’s slide into chaos.

Arab Diplomatic Push for Sudan

Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, Hossam Zaki, stated that the summit would address several key regional issues, with the Sudan crisis standing out due to its rapidly deteriorating humanitarian and political dimensions. Zaki underscored the importance of continued Arab unity and reaffirmed the League’s commitment to regularly convene summits to reinforce regional cohesion.

Calls for Ceasefire and Dialogue

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi called for collective Arab action to resolve the Sudanese conflict, warning that its continuation could lead to a prolonged war with dangerous implications for both Sudan and the region. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani echoed those concerns, expressing Iraq’s support for initiatives aimed at ending the fighting and preventing the country’s fragmentation.

Regional and International Mediation

The summit coincides with ongoing regional and international efforts to broker peace in Sudan. Cairo recently hosted a dialogue involving Sudanese political and civil actors, alongside representatives from neighboring countries and global organizations, seeking a roadmap toward ending the conflict.

African Union Commission Chair Moussa Faki also warned that the Sudanese crisis could spiral into a full-scale civil war if left unresolved, urging unified international and regional efforts to address the conflict.

Hope for a Comprehensive Solution

Arab nations are hopeful that the summit will produce unified positions and practical steps toward achieving a ceasefire in Sudan. There is a growing push to open channels for dialogue between warring factions and pave the way for a return to civilian governance.

The Arab League reiterated its commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing that a comprehensive political solution is the only way to end the suffering of the Sudanese people and stabilize the country.
