Amid worsening humanitarian conditions in Sudan, the Syrian government has announced the deployment of a special team to assist and evacuate Syrian nationals caught in the ongoing conflict.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani stated on the platform X (formerly Twitter): “Following the directives of President Ahmad Al-Shar’, we are dispatching a special team to Sudan to assess the conditions of Syrian citizens, provide necessary support, and facilitate their evacuation to safety” (source).
Thousands of Syrians had previously sought refuge in Sudan following the Syrian uprising that began in March 2011 and eventually led to the fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime in December 2024. Many now find themselves trapped in dire conditions due to the ongoing armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.
The situation has become increasingly perilous for Syrian refugees, with limited options for return and escalating violence across Sudan’s urban centers. The Syrian government’s move signals a rare instance of direct intervention abroad, aiming to alleviate the plight of its citizens abroad.
Sudan has been gripped by conflict since April 2023, with thousands killed and millions displaced. International observers continue to warn of a looming humanitarian catastrophe unless a ceasefire and political resolution are urgently secured.
