The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced on Friday an additional $200 million in humanitarian aid for the Sudanese people. The announcement was made during the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for Sudan, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

A Renewed Commitment and a Call for a Ceasefire

Reaffirming its steadfast commitment to supporting Sudan, the UAE emphasized the importance of collective efforts to address the worsening humanitarian crisis. The Gulf nation also called for a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan to facilitate the delivery of urgent aid to those in need.

In its official statement, the UAE stressed the necessity of ensuring the safe and unobstructed delivery of humanitarian assistance across Sudan. It also urged the international community to intensify its efforts to ensure an effective humanitarian response.

Billions in Aid and the UAE’s Key Role

According to official figures, the UAE has provided Sudan with over $600 million in humanitarian aid since April 2023. Over the past decade, its total assistance to the country has surpassed $3.5 billion, highlighting Abu Dhabi’s prominent role in supporting humanitarian relief efforts.

An Unprecedented Humanitarian Catastrophe

Speaking at the conference, Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, described the situation in Sudan as “unprecedented”, underscoring the urgent need to deliver life-saving aid to the Sudanese people.

Meanwhile, Lana Nusseibeh, UAE Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs, previously warned that the humanitarian crisis in Sudan had spiraled beyond endurance. She emphasized the critical need to allow relief teams unrestricted access to affected communities.

UN: $6 Billion Required for Sudan’s 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, addressing the conference, stated that the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan for Sudan and its refugee crisis requires $6 billion to meet the urgent needs of millions affected by the ongoing conflict.

UAE Support Amid Sudanese Allegations

Despite its significant humanitarian contributions, Emirati involvement in Sudan has come under scrutiny. Officials from Sudan’s army and government have accused Abu Dhabi of supplying weapons and military equipment to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—a claim that has sparked controversy over the UAE’s role in the conflict.

Conclusion

As Sudan’s crisis deepens, the UAE remains a major contributor to humanitarian relief efforts, balancing its assistance initiatives with geopolitical complexities. While aid continues to flow, the need for a sustainable political solution remains paramount to resolving what has become one of the most severe humanitarian catastrophes in recent history.
