As conflicts continue to escalate across Africa, the 38th African Union (AU) Summit featured a high-level meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council focused on the crisis in Sudan and the deteriorating situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). During the meeting, African leaders stressed the need for peaceful dialogue and called for an immediate halt to all forms of foreign interference, which they warned were exacerbating the conflicts.

Equatorial Guinea’s President: Renewing Commitment to a Peaceful Solution

The President of Equatorial Guinea, who holds the rotating presidency of the AU Peace and Security Council for February, played a key role in reaffirming the need for a diplomatic resolution to the Sudanese crisis. He emphasized that achieving a sustainable and peaceful solution requires genuine political will from all parties, free from external interventions that further complicate the political and military landscape.

Moussa Faki: Foreign Involvement Worsens Sudan’s Crisis

Meanwhile, AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat warned that foreign interference is only deepening Sudan’s crisis. He called on regional and international actors to immediately cease meddling in Sudan’s internal affairs, stressing that any resolution should be driven by the Sudanese people themselves under the umbrella of African-led mediation efforts.

Faki reaffirmed that the AU remains neutral in Sudan’s conflict and is committed to finding African solutions to African problems while ensuring national sovereignty is respected and Sudan does not become a battleground for external power struggles.

The AU’s Role: Challenges and Opportunities

The statements from Equatorial Guinea’s President and Moussa Faki Mahamat reflect the AU’s increasing determination to safeguard Africa’s political independence and prevent external forces from dictating the course of African conflicts.

With the Sudanese and Congolese crises still unresolved, the AU faces a major challenge in implementing effective conflict-resolution mechanisms. However, this also presents an opportunity for the organization to demonstrate its leadership in diplomatic solutions, ensuring African nations handle their affairs without foreign interference.

Conclusion

As Africa continues to seek sustainable peace and stability, the AU—led by Moussa Faki Mahamat and Equatorial Guinea’s President—has sent a clear message: solutions must come from within the continent, and any external involvement that fuels further instability will not be tolerated.
